Hey everyone! Exciting news over here at Wicked Ideas HQ. Photojournalist Michael Hawkins and I are going to be creating ‘Mighty River’, a book about the recent spring flood.
The book, due out later this year from MacIntyre Purcell Publishing Inc, will feature images and stories about this history-making flood and the volunteers, evacuees and first responders who raced the rising river to save their communities.
We are looking for images of the mighty St. John River, of ‘Lac Saint-Jean’ as the waters rose and of the effect the flood had on homes, cottages, businesses and families.
We are also hoping to interview and visit with some of you to learn first-hand what happened and what comes next for you and your family. What was lost, what was saved and what was learned.
Were you among the first to see the water rising in Edmundston? Did you watch the river’s power build as it rushed through Grand Falls-Grand Sault? Were you forced to travel by boat as the waters surrounded the Grand Lake area? Did you work in The Pit in Grand Bay-Westfield? Race the Fundy tides in the Saint John, Rothesay and Quispamsis?
Or perhaps you have a story to tell about the poetry and beauty of the river. In addition to your individual stories about the flood, we are also interested in telling the river’s story, it’s role in the life and culture of New Brunswick for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, and also its science. What has been going on with the river over the past 50 years and the impact the changing climate is having on it and the people who live along its banks.
